Smart Apps for the Enterprise – Mendix World 2016 keynote

Smart Apps for the Enterprise – Mendix World 2016 keynote

Last years Mendix World was centered around Smart Apps. It was the best conference of the year. At least in my opinion, I might be biased… The conference had a great speaker line-up, including keynotes from Geoffrey Moore, Simon Wardley, and Adrian Cockcroft. All slides and videos can be found here. I had the honor to announce Mendix 7, our latest major release. I explored the topic of Smart Apps.

From Software-Defined to Metadata-Driven

From Software-Defined to Metadata-Driven

Software is eating the world! Every company is becoming a software company. If companies don’t, they cease to exist. Just imagine: you are a thermostat maker and suddenly you have Google as a competitor (via its Nest acquisition). This is just one of the many recent examples. Interestingly a lot of the innovations in the software industry are fuelled by abstraction and automation, concepts that are well-known in the Model-Driven.

A couple of weeks ago we had Mendix World, our global community event. I really enjoyed the event! It was inspiring to talk with so many of our users, customers, and partners, and to just feel the vibe. If you missed it you can get a glimpse of the experience from this photo overview as well as all the content on the Mendix World recap page. I opened the second.

Software is disrupting Industries: are you Trendwatcher or Trendsetter?

Software is disrupting Industries: are you Trendwatcher or Trendsetter?

A couple of months ago I was keynote speaker at an event about modern application development environments. Here are the slides and a brief abstract.

The Evolution of PaaS in the Enterprise

The Evolution of PaaS in the Enterprise

This morning I was part of a panel at the GigaOM Structure:Europe 2012 conference in Amsterdam., titled: The Evolution of Private PaaS solutions. The abstract: Enterprises are starting to take interest in running PaaS solutions virtually, as app developers want to focus on building apps rather than dealing with infrastructure issues. Enterprises that use PaaS solutions almost always go down the private route. In this session we focus on private.

18 lessons learned during the 6 year roller-coaster ride called Mendix

Last week I gave a talk about the lessons learned during the exponential growth of our company the last six years. I was invited to to talk at the Appsterdam meetup in Delft about “growing pains”. In other words: what lessons did we learn when our company grew from 3 to 100 employees. I enjoyed the preparations as much as the actual talk, as it forced me to step back.

Making Model-Driven Software Development live up to its promises

Making Model-Driven Software Development live up to its promises

Model Driven Development proponents see a lot of advantages of using MDD techniques. Higher development speed, increased quality, more cost-effective, empowering less-experienced developers, just to name a few. If you look at these promises the question arises why the whole world isn’t using MDD right now? Why don’t we hear a lot of MDD success stories? In a recent article I wrote about some of the main concerns which prevent.

Language Workbench Competition 2011

May 24th the first Language Workbench Competition have been held in Cambridge (UK) as a warming-up of the Code Generation conference. The idea for a language workbench competition originates from a group of people during Code Generation 2010. A lot of new initiatives in the field of language workbenches are arising to facilitate the creation of Domain Specific Languages (DSLs) and their accompanied code generators and IDEs. They all have.

Code Generation 2011

Last year I enjoyed visiting the Code Generation conference. I presented my lessons learned in building a Model Driven Software Factory, met a lot of interesting people, and had a lot of fun. It’s really interesting to share experiences with people (experts!) in the field of Model Driven Software Development. Have a look at my write-up of a Birds of a Feather (BoF) session about Code Generation vs. Model Interpretation.

Why there is no future for Model Driven Development
